Understanding the challenge

Working with people in difficult life situations is highly demanding and can place extreme strain on our mental, emotional and physical well-being. Staff and volunteers often do this under very challenging conditions, which can lead to chronic stress, interpersonal tensions and reduced productivity, with long‑term consequences ranging from burnout and depression to substance use as a coping strategy.

This demanding work therefore requires not only professional expertise, but also exceptional emotional, mental and psychosocial strength.

When the burden becomes too heavy

The impact on the quality of work is often underestimated or only recognised once clear signs of exhaustion appear. Those who are constantly there for others often neglect their own needs – a dangerous cycle. Emotional exhaustion affects not only one’s own well-being but also the ability to support others effectively.

An important insight:
Our training rarely prepares us with practical stress‑ or self‑management strategies to deal effectively with these demanding aspects of the work. This is a gap we want to close together.

What participants say:

A moving story

Natalya Kozyr, a psychotherapist from Kyiv, shares her transformative experience:

“In one of my sessions, a former client spoke about her experience with the breathing exercises. After I started the breathing myself, it really became easier, truly easier. During meditation the tears flowed like a waterfall; I probably had to let them all leave my body.”

“And then, as they say, the light at the end of the tunnel – well, it is really there. This December it will be exactly a year that I have been doing the breathing exercises every morning. I can no longer manage without them. They are my antidepressant.”

The experiences of our participants consistently show that real change is possible. When we take the time to support ourselves, we can also support others in a more sustainable and effective way. This investment in oneself is not selfish – it is essential.
